About Us

Spruced Nest is a home and lifestyle site about the ordinary problems that come with living in a house: the shower door that will not come clean, the machine that smells, the cupboard that never stays tidy.

Most advice on these topics is written by people who have never had the problem. You can tell, because it skips the part where the method does not work the first time, and it never mentions the step that ruins something.

We write the other kind. Everything here has been tried in a real house, usually badly at first, and what we publish includes the things that failed.

Who writes this

two or three paragraphs, first person. This is the most-read page on the site after the articles, and it is the page a reviewer opens to find out whether a real person is behind it. Cover: who you are, where you live (city or region is enough), what kind of home you look after, and why you started writing this. Concrete details are what make it work — an old flat with bad ventilation, a hard water area, a rented place with fittings you cannot replace, two cats. Put a photo of yourself here too. It does more for trust than anything else on the page. ]]

What we cover

  • Cleaning — the jobs that need a method rather than more effort, and the products that are worth buying
  • Kitchen — appliance care, storage, and making a small kitchen work
  • Organising — storage for awkward spaces, and systems that survive a normal week
  • Garden and outdoors — small gardens, balconies and the bits outside the back door
  • Living with pets — the house side of it: hair, smells, floors and furniture

How we work

Three rules run through everything on the site.

We try it first. If an article describes a method, someone here has done it. Where we are drawing on manufacturer guidance or published research rather than our own experience, we say so in the article.

We include the failures. The thing that scratched the glass, the product that did nothing, the step that was a waste of an afternoon. Knowing what not to do is usually worth more than the method itself.

We say when something cannot be fixed. Etched glass does not come back. Some stains are permanent. A guide that promises everything can be restored is not being straight with you, and we would rather tell you to stop spending Saturdays on it.

More detail on our research and correction process is on the editorial policy page.

How the site is funded

Spruced Nest is supported by advertising, which is what keeps it free to read. Ads are clearly labelled and kept out of the way of the text as far as we can manage.

Advertisers have no say in what we write, and no advertiser sees an article before it goes live. Where an article contains an affiliate link, it is disclosed on the page.
