Editorial Policy
This page sets out how articles on Spruced Nest are researched, written and corrected, and how advertising is kept separate from editorial decisions.
How an article gets written
We start with a problem someone has actually had, usually in this house. Then:
- We try the common advice first, including the version that turns up in every search result, and note where it falls short.
- We check manufacturer guidance for the appliances, materials and finishes involved, because that is what determines whether a method is safe on a particular surface.
- We do the job properly and record what happened: how long it took, what it cost, what had to be repeated, what went wrong.
- We write it up with the failures included, and with the specific numbers — times, temperatures, quantities — rather than vague instructions.
Where something is outside our own experience, we say so in the article rather than presenting research as first-hand testing.
Sources
When an article relies on outside information — a manufacturer’s safety guidance, a standards body, published research — we say where it came from and link to it where a link exists.
We prefer primary sources. Where guidance differs between manufacturers, we say that rather than picking one and presenting it as settled.
Safety
Home cleaning and maintenance involve real hazards, mostly from mixing products and from jobs that should not be done without training. Our approach:
- Where a method carries a risk, the warning goes next to the method, not in a footnote at the bottom.
- We do not publish instructions for work that should be done by a qualified electrician, gas engineer or plumber.
- We name the combinations that produce dangerous gases wherever a relevant product is mentioned.
- Where a finish or material can be damaged permanently, we say so before describing the method.
Our full disclaimer covers the limits of what general advice can do.
Corrections and updates
We get things wrong sometimes, and products and guidance change.
If you find a mistake, email support@sprucednest.com with the article title and what is wrong. We check every report.
- Factual errors are corrected as soon as we have confirmed them.
- Safety errors are dealt with immediately, and the article is taken down while we check if necessary.
- Significant changes to an article are noted on the page so you can see what changed.
- Every article shows its last updated date, so you can see how current it is.
Typos and small clarifications are fixed without a note.
Advertising and editorial independence
This site is funded by advertising. That relationship is kept separate from what we publish:
- Advertisers have no input into article topics or content, and do not see articles before publication.
- Ads are served automatically by third parties. An advertisement appearing beside an article is not an endorsement by us.
- We do not accept payment for a favourable mention, a link, or a place in a list.
- We do not publish sponsored posts or guest articles written to place links.
- Where an article contains an affiliate link, that is disclosed on the page.
- Ads are labelled and kept out of the flow of the text as far as the layout allows.
If we are ever given a product to test, the article says so, and it does not change what we conclude.
Use of AI tools
An honest statement here is better than no statement, and much better than one that is not true. Suggested wording if you use AI tools for drafting or research: We sometimes use AI tools to help with research, structure and first drafts. Every article is then checked, edited and verified by a person before it is published, and the testing, results and judgements in our articles are our own. We do not publish anything that has not been reviewed by a human. ]]

Comments
Comments are moderated. We remove spam, promotional posts and abuse. We do not remove a comment simply because it disagrees with the article, and corrections that arrive in the comments get the same treatment as ones sent by email.
